BuzzFeed disclosed in an SEC filing on July 27, 2026 that it will lay off about 180 employees, roughly 35% of its 510-person staff, with cuts across the flagship site plus HuffPost and Tasty. It is the first major restructuring under Byron Allen, who took a 52% controlling stake in May and became CEO in a $120 million deal funded with $20 million in cash and a $100 million promissory note.
The filing projects $29 million to $32 million in annualized savings from the reduction. BuzzFeed went public in 2021 at a $1.5 billion valuation, shut BuzzFeed News in 2023, and had already shrunk from thousands of employees to about 510 before Allen's takeover.
