Dell has cut 11,000 jobs, representing 10% of its workforce, for the third consecutive year. The $569 million severance bill is the cost of systematically shrinking a hardware company into an AI infrastructure provider. Dell's stock is up 24% since the cuts were announced.

Three straight years of 10% reductions means Dell has eliminated roughly 30% of the workforce it had in 2023. The company is pivoting aggressively from PC manufacturing to AI server infrastructure, betting that the demand for GPU-ready data center hardware will more than compensate for declining personal computer sales.

Dell's trajectory illustrates a broader pattern: legacy tech companies are using AI not just to cut costs but to completely redefine their business models. The workers being cut are in traditional hardware, sales, and support roles. The workers being hired (far fewer) are in AI infrastructure and cloud services.
